GENERAL FACTS ABOUT BOTOXBotox is a cost effective way of having a non-surgical facelift. An increasingly large number of people are using Botox injections to regain a more youthful appearance. Botox is particularly great for the treatment of expression lines such as crow’s feet and forehead frown lines. These lines are caused when overactive muscle movement wears away the collagen in the skin, which in turn causes the skin to crease or wrinkle.
What is Botox? BOTOX® is the commercial tradename for Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botox was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic use in April 2002. How does Botox work? The Botulinum toxin when injected into the facial muscles in minute quantities, relaxes the muscles and improves the appearance of wrinkles that are caused by the movement of these muscles. Thus preventing wrinkles and smoothing out lines. When injected into muscles Botox has a local effect. It blocks transmission between the nerve endings and muscle fibres around the injection site to cause weakness of the nearby muscle. Where does Botox work best ? Botox is usually used on the upper third of the face, to tackle frown lines, forehead creases and crows' feet around the eyes. Lines around the lips and corners of the mouth are also treatable. Untreated areas of the face aren't affected, so you can still smile and frown, but the skin on the treated areas won't wrinkle as much as usual. Is Botox safe? Although Botox is a very powerful toxin it is injected in such small quantities that it is perfectly safe. What is the procedure ? Your doctor will administer several tiny injections of Botox directly into the muscles of your face. Prior to injection, your doctor will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. The entire Botox injection procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and does not require anaesthesia. You should notice an improvement in your frown lines within 3 to 7 days, the effects of which can last up to 4 months. However, results may vary. Is it painful ? Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. How long do the Botox injections last? Over time, Botox is broken down by the body so the effect doesn’t last for ever.
